The goal of our customer Nukute is to make sleep apnea diagnosis as smooth and reliable as possible. Sleep apnea is a big health problem globally, which decreases life quality a lot. The key selling points of the Nukute product are ease-of-use for the patients and convenience and data accuracy for the doctors. Codemate was able to participate in this highly interesting journey.
The Nukute product consists of a collar, a hand sensor and a tablet application. Unlike competitors’ solutions, Nukute users can shift positions while sleeping, without affecting measurement reliability. It’s also more comfortable to use than traditional diagnostic devices. Nukute has invested in usability so that patients can learn the usage independently, saving a considerable amount of doctors’ time and enabling patients to see if the measurements are successful.
Doctors have a dedicated Clinic software on the cloud to analyze their patients’ sleep patterns and diagnose sleep apnea.
Collaboration model and team
Codemate’s role was to boost Nukute R&D and design, especially in the doctors’ Clinic software.
When designing the new user interfaces, we wanted to involve the end users integrally in the design process. The doctors involved with the user research gave valuable insights on how they would like to use the clinic solution. Our UX Designer Tiina was responsible for the usability and user interface design for both the patient tablet app and the doctors’ clinic UI. Olli from our design team created beautiful user manuals for the patients and illustrated graphics for the application UI.
Our software architect Joonas contributed to the development of the renewed Clinic UI and improving the back-end / cloud system.
Technology
Nukute back-end system consists of five separate microservices that handle different parts of the system independently, yet communicating with each other. For example the data sent out by the tablet application is first analyzed with Nukute’s proprietary AI engine and then optimized for different time ranges and zoom levels required by the user interface. This data post-processing service was created during this process.
The user interface has different user roles and permissions. The most important feature for the doctors is viewing the patient sleep data and marking different events to the data set easily.
It was a fun project and I hope it helps people around the world sleep better!

Results
Doctors have given a lot of positive feedback on the usability of the solution.
In our most recent collaboration, we have helped develop a version of the clinic application that can be used in the care of Covid-19 patients. The solution also has great potential in the treatment of pulmonary diseases in general.
